Threads character counter

A Threads post can have up to 500 characters, and Meta's API counts each emoji as its size in UTF-8 bytes, so a thumbs-up uses 4. Paste your text into this Threads character counter to see what's left, how many links it has (five at most) and, if it's too long, how it splits into a numbered thread.

The 500 limit is easy to hit with emoji. Ten emoji in a post use 40 characters by Meta's count, while you see only ten symbols. The "API count" line in the counter shows that number; the big counter uses whichever of the two is higher, so a post that passes here passes both ways.

Five links is a hard ceiling, but most posts need far fewer. What Meta and Adam Mosseri have said about links and reach is in how the Threads algorithm works.

How the Threads character counter counts

Characters are what you see: a letter, a space, an emoji or a flag counts as one. API count follows Meta's rule for emoji, which matters if you post through a scheduler or any tool that uses the Threads API. Links are unique URLs that start with http://, https:// or www.; the same link twice counts once. Words and paragraphs help you keep posts readable.

Bold or italic letters made with the Threads font generator count as one character each in both lines. Meta's documentation says nothing about how it counts them, so leave some room if a post uses many.

Nothing you type is sent anywhere. The page counts in your browser and forgets the text when you close it.

When your post is over 500

You have three options.

  1. Cut. In our own data the posts that took off were short. We collected 901 posts from Threads search in October 2026, 478 of them selling posts (268 Russian, 210 English). The English selling posts that took off had a median of 88 characters (119 for the rest), and the Russian ones a median of 120 (128 for the rest). The details are in how to go viral on Threads.
  2. Make a thread. The splitter breaks the text at paragraph and sentence ends. A sentence longer than the limit is split between words, never inside one; only a single "word" longer than the limit, such as a very long URL, stays in a part that is still over. With numbering on (the default) each part gets 1/3, 2/3, 3/3 and room for that label. Post the first part, then reply to it with the next one.
  3. Use a text attachment. For long notes, a text attachment holds up to 10,000 characters under a short post.

Replies follow the same 500-character rule, but a good reply is far shorter. If you reply to many posts a day, Replyvero drafts one- or two-sentence replies in the author's language, aimed at under 250 characters. By default you review each one before it goes out.

Questions and answers

What is the character limit on Threads?

500 characters per post, and a reply is a post, so it gets the same 500. Anything longer goes into a text attachment or a thread.

Do emojis count as more than one character on Threads?

By the rule in Meta's API documentation, yes: an emoji counts as its size in UTF-8 bytes, so most use 4 of the 500 and combined emoji such as families use more. The app shows each emoji as one symbol, which is why a post can count longer than it looks.

How do I post more than 500 characters on Threads?

Put the long part into a text attachment (up to 10,000 characters) under a short post, or publish a thread where each part replies to the one before. The counter's splitter prepares the parts for a thread.

How many links can a Threads post have?

Five unique links. Since December 22, 2025 Meta's API rejects posts with more, and the same URL used twice counts once. Our counter recognizes links that start with http://, https:// or www., so count bare domains like example.com yourself.

What is the Threads bio character limit?

Meta doesn't publish one. Most third-party guides say 150 characters, the same as Instagram, but we couldn't find that number in Meta's Help Center, so go by what the app lets you save.
