# Threads statistics 2026: users, growth and how it compares with X

> Threads statistics as of October 2026: Meta says Threads passed 500 million monthly active users in June 2026, and its latest official daily figure is more than 150 million, from October 2025. Outside estimates disagree on the trend. Similarweb puts Threads ahead of X in daily mobile users while X still leads on the web and in the US, and Apptopia estimated falling Threads usage in spring 2026.

## Threads statistics at a glance

Threads statistics come from two kinds of sources, and they often disagree. Meta publishes round milestones for its own app: 500 million monthly active users in June 2026 and more than 150 million daily users in October 2025. Analytics firms such as Similarweb and Apptopia publish estimates, mostly for the mobile apps, and some of those point the other way. Every number on this page has a date and a link. Meta's own statements come first, and third-party numbers are labeled as estimates.

| June 16, 2026 | 500 million monthly | [Meta Newsroom](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/06/meta-launching-new-features-500-million-monthly-threads-users/) |

Sign-ups and active users are different numbers. The 100 million from July 2023 counts accounts created in the first five days. Three months later Mark Zuckerberg spoke of "just under 100 million" monthly actives, and in February 2024 he said more people were using Threads than at the launch peak.

The jump from 400 to 500 million took about ten months, roughly 100 million new monthly users since August 2025, as [Engadget](https://www.engadget.com/2194963/threads-hit-half-billion-monthly-users/) noted. Most of that growth still comes from Meta's other apps. "The engine that powers our growth today are promotions we do on Facebook and Instagram," head of Threads Connor Hayes told [Business Insider](https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-threads-connor-hayes-ai-growth-interview-kafka-2026-9) in September 2026. Meta also told Engadget that "more people are opening Threads directly over time".

One wording detail: Meta's [Japanese announcement](https://about.fb.com/ja/news/2026/06/meta-launching-new-features-500-million-monthly-threads-users/) of the same milestone says "monthly active accounts". None of the announcements we read explains how a person with two accounts is counted.

## Threads daily active users

Meta has given three specific daily figures: 100 million in December 2024, "more than 100 million" in [January 2025](https://www.threads.com/@mosseri/post/DFbvoBoRPAI), and more than 150 million in October 2025. In April 2026 CFO Susan Li repeated that the last update was "over 150 million" and said daily and monthly actives grew in the first quarter ([Q1 2026 follow-up call](https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2026/q1/META-Q1-2026-Follow-Up-Call-Transcript.pdf)). In June 2026 Meta told [The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/tech/950480/meta-threads-500-million-monthly-active-users-communities-your-algo) that daily users continue to "increase strongly across the globe". Hayes told [Bloomberg](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-06-16/meta-s-threads-tops-500-million-users-three-years-after-launch) the number was up from a year earlier but would not share it.

Put 150 million daily next to 400 million monthly and roughly 37% of monthly users opened Threads on a given day in autumn 2025. Treat that as a rough ratio, because the two figures were announced two months apart.

[Apptopia](https://apptopia.com/en/insights/threads-is-bleeding-users/), an app analytics firm, published the opposite picture in May 2026. It estimated that global daily users had fallen every month for eight months, that US daily users were 61% below their October 2024 peak, and that monthly users had slipped from 400 million in January to 388 million in April 2026. Bloomberg noted that Meta's June claim "runs counter to external estimates". Meta announced 500 million monthly users a month after Apptopia's report, and it has not published a daily number since October 2025, so the disagreement can't be settled from public data.

### Mobile estimates vs Meta's totals

The Similarweb numbers in most headlines count people using the iOS and Android apps. Web traffic is reported separately, and Meta's milestones cover Threads as a whole without a device split. The gap matters. For January 13, 2026, Similarweb estimated 145.4 million daily web visits to X and 8.5 million to Threads, [TechCrunch reported](https://techcrunch.com/2026/01/18/threads-edges-out-x-in-daily-mobile-users-new-data-shows/). By these estimates, Threads is overwhelmingly a phone app.

## Threads vs X users

On mobile, Similarweb's estimates put Threads ahead. According to [Forbes](https://www.forbes.com/sites/conormurray/2026/01/16/threads-widens-lead-over-musks-x-zuckerbergs-platform-adds-millions/), Threads first passed X on September 5, 2025 (130 million to 129 million daily mobile users; a later Forbes piece dates the first pass to the week ending September 21) and averaged 143.2 million to X's 126.2 million in the first 13 days of January 2026. By April 2026 it was 135.7 million to 126.9 million ([Forbes](https://www.forbes.com/sites/conormurray/2026/06/16/threads-metas-x-competitor-hits-500-million-monthly-users/)). Similarweb's own Threads estimate dropped about 5% between January and April while staying ahead.

In the US and on the web, X leads. Similarweb estimated 21.3 million US daily mobile users for X and 18.3 million for Threads in April 2026, and X's web audience is more than ten times larger.

Monthly users are the hardest comparison, because X no longer reports user numbers the way a public company does. The best recent figure comes from its owner: SpaceX's IPO filing in May 2026 reported about 550 million monthly active users across X and Grok combined as of March 31, 2026, per TechCrunch. [Forbes](https://www.forbes.com/sites/siladityaray/2026/05/21/x-has-550-million-active-users-groks-spicy-mode-may-cause-reputational-harm-spacex-ipo-filing/) reported the same filing as X having around 550 million. Elon Musk had claimed 600 million in 2024, as [TechCrunch noted at the time](https://techcrunch.com/2024/07/03/threads-nears-its-one-year-anniversary-with-more-than-175m-monthly-active-users/). In September 2026 Zuckerberg said on the Sources podcast that Threads is "either bigger than X at this point or it's like very soon about to be", while adding that X is still where much of the AI and tech community talks ([TipRanks via Business Insider](https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/why-is-meta-stock-rising-in-premarket-today-sept-9-1036533558)).

Engagement is where X looks stronger. Apptopia says X beats Threads on time spent per daily user, sessions per daily user and churn. It also estimates that men make up about 75% of X's active users and about 54% on Threads.

## Where Threads is used: countries

Threads launched in more than 100 countries and reached the EU on December 14, 2023, [per Instagram](https://about.instagram.com/blog/announcements/threads-instagram-text-feature). Meta doesn't publish users by country in any announcement we found. It does name markets:

- In October 2024 Susan Li cited "especially strong user growth in key markets like the U.S., Taiwan and Japan" ([Q3 2024 call](https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2024/q3/META-Q3-2024-Earnings-Call-Transcript.pdf)).
- In April 2026 she called the US and Japan "priority markets" ([Q1 2026 follow-up call](https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2026/q1/META-Q1-2026-Follow-Up-Call-Transcript.pdf)).
- In June 2026 Meta reported time spent up more than 130% in Japan and 80% in South Korea year over year ([Meta Japan, in Japanese](https://about.fb.com/ja/news/2026/06/meta-launching-new-features-500-million-monthly-threads-users/); [Engadget](https://www.engadget.com/2194963/threads-hit-half-billion-monthly-users/)), and made communities local with native-language tags in Japan, Korea and Taiwan first.

Some features depend on the country. Meta's [newsroom post](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/02/threads-dear-algo/) listed the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand for Dear Algo in February 2026, while @threads' own [launch post](https://www.threads.com/@threads/post/DUovfKEkfbb) named Canada as well. Your Algo rolled out in June 2026 in the same five countries ([Meta Newsroom](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/06/meta-launching-new-features-500-million-monthly-threads-users/)).

Be careful with "top countries" lists. [Sprout Social's 2026 statistics page](https://sproutsocial.com/insights/threads-statistics/) says India had 32% of downloads, Brazil 22% and the US 16%, but the source it links is a July 2023 report. Those are launch-month download shares, which say little about who uses Threads now.

## Business, ads and creator statistics

Ads came late and are still light. Meta began testing them in early 2025 ([Q4 2024 call](https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2024/q4/META-Q4-2024-Earnings-Call-Transcript.pdf)), opened them to advertisers in April 2025, and by April 2026 was running them in over 200 countries. On the [July 2026 call](https://investor.atmeta.com/files/doc_financials/2026/q2/META-Q2-2026-Earnings-Call-Transcript.pdf) Meta said it had completed the global expansion. In January 2026 Meta listed image, video and carousel ads, Advantage+ catalog and app ads, and third-party brand safety checks, and said ad delivery would "initially" stay low. Susan Li said in April 2026 that Meta does not expect Threads to be "a meaningful driver of overall impression or revenue growth" this year.

Meta keeps reporting engagement gains from ranking changes: 35% more time spent on Threads over the six months to April 2025 ([Q1 2025 call](https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2025/q1/Transcripts/META-Q1-2025-Earnings-Call-Transcript-1.pdf)), 10% in Q3 2025 ([Q3 2025 call](https://investor.atmeta.com/files/doc_financials/2025/q3/META-Q3-2025-Earnings-Call-Transcript.pdf)), and a 20% lift from changes made in Q4 2025 ([Q4 2025 call](https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2025/q4/META-Q4-2025-Earnings-Call-Transcript.pdf)).

Some other numbers from Meta:

- Users were sending about 350 million direct messages a week by May 2026, 30% more per week than at the start of the year (company figures given to [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/05/threads-finally-brings-messaging-to-the-web/)).
- During the 2026 World Cup, tournament-tagged posts got 1.5 billion impressions, and content from the tournament community reached about 15 million people a day, peaking at 25 million on July 6 ([Meta Newsroom](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/07/the-2026-summer-of-football-a-record-breaking-moment-across-meta/)).
- Creators have no direct way to earn on Threads. In December 2025 Hayes described it as a traffic channel to platforms where creators get paid ([The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/column/847806/head-of-threads-interview)).

One vendor survey is worth knowing about if you treat it as self-reported. In Sprout Social's Q1 2025 survey of marketers ([Sprout Social](https://sproutsocial.com/insights/threads-statistics/)), 57% said their brand posts on Threads: 64% of B2C brands and 19% of B2B brands.

## What these numbers mean if you're choosing Threads for business

The audience is large, but much of it checks in rather than living there. With 500 million monthly users and 150 million or more daily, a lot of people open Threads only some days. Hayes told [The Verge](https://www.theverge.com/column/847806/head-of-threads-interview) in December 2025 that Threads prioritizes posts from the last 24 hours, so being present several times a week beats one perfect post.

Write for a phone. Similarweb's estimates put the web at under a tenth of Threads' daily mobile audience. Your first line has to work on a small screen.

Look at who you need, not the headline total. X still leads in the US and on the web in Similarweb's estimates, and Zuckerberg said Meta stays on X partly because the tech and AI crowd is there. Meta's own growth notes point to Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and the US, and to communities around the NBA, K-pop, reality TV and books. In Sprout's survey, B2C brands were more than three times as likely as B2B brands to post on Threads.

Paid reach is still thin, so conversations do most of the work. Ads only reached every market in 2026, and Meta expects little revenue from them this year. For a small business that means posts, replies in other people's threads, communities and DMs. How replies feed ranking is in our [Threads algorithm guide](https://replyvero.com/guides/threads-algorithm/), and turning those conversations into paying work is covered in [how to get clients on Threads](https://replyvero.com/guides/get-clients-on-threads/).

The slow part is finding enough threads where your reply belongs. [Replyvero](https://replyvero.com/threads-auto-reply/) is a Chrome extension that searches Threads for posts in your niche and drafts short replies; by default each one waits for you to send it. Threads' [Terms of Use](https://help.instagram.com/769983657850450) restrict automated access, so any automation carries a risk of restrictions at any pace, and the built-in sending limits lower that risk without removing it. [Plans start with a free one-hour trial](https://replyvero.com/#pricing).

Then check your own numbers. Platform totals say nothing about whether your followers reply. Our guide to [Threads insights](https://replyvero.com/guides/threads-insights/) shows where to see that after a few weeks of posting, and the [Threads engagement rate calculator](https://replyvero.com/tools/threads-engagement-rate-calculator/) turns one post's numbers into a rate you can compare across posts.

## How this page is sourced

Meta's statements come first: newsroom posts, earnings call transcripts and posts by Adam Mosseri, who oversaw Threads before Connor Hayes became its head. Press reports come next. Analytics firms come last and are labeled as estimates. When two sources disagree, both are shown with their dates. We last checked every number on October 20, 2026, and Meta's next earnings call may change the headline figures.

## Questions and answers

### How many people use Threads in 2026?

Meta said on June 16, 2026 that Threads had passed 500 million monthly active users, and repeated the figure on its July 29, 2026 earnings call. The latest official daily figure is more than 150 million, announced in October 2025.

### How many daily active users does Threads have?

Meta's last specific number is more than 150 million daily active users, from October 2025. Since then Meta has only said that daily users keep growing. Similarweb estimated 135.7 million daily users of the Threads mobile apps in April 2026.

### Does Threads have more users than X?

It depends on the measure. On phones, Similarweb's estimates have put Threads ahead of X worldwide in daily users since September 2025, but X stays ahead on the web and in the US. For monthly users, Meta reports 500 million for Threads, while SpaceX's IPO filing put X and Grok together at about 550 million in March 2026.

### Is Threads growing or losing users?

Meta says it is growing: from 400 million monthly users in August 2025 to 500 million in June 2026, with daily users up year over year. Apptopia estimated the opposite in May 2026, with daily users falling for eight months in a row, so Meta and this tracker disagree.

### Which country uses Threads the most?

Meta doesn't break its user numbers down by country. The markets it singles out are the US, Japan and Taiwan for user growth, and Japan and South Korea for time spent, which by June 2026 had risen more than 130% and 80% in a year. Similarweb's estimates still put X ahead of Threads in the US.

### Can businesses run ads on Threads?

Yes. Meta opened Threads ads to all eligible advertisers in April 2025 and finished rolling them out to every market in the second quarter of 2026. You add Threads placements to Advantage+ or manual campaigns in Meta's ad tools. Meta doesn't expect Threads to add much to its revenue growth this year.
